One of the best decisions I took in the last years has been to sell my car… and not to buy a new one.
We had a ten years old Opel Astra that began to give us problems, even though three doors wasn’t enough for two adults, two daughters with children seats, etc. We didn’t want to say it but it was the time to think about changing it. I had started to check the prices of the cars in the market, and listening to my work partners when they talked about the new models, when I thought: “but , do we really need a car?”
Do you really need a car?
First of all: think about it, how much do you use your car?. If you live far away from your work, in a residential neighborhood fifteen kilometres away from the city center you can stop reading, but in other case maybe this can be interesting for you.
Why do we live in cities? One of the main answers is to share infrastructure. Nobody has their own water well, or their electric generator (this, maybe, you could), but everybody has a car. We have many other means of transport but, for any reason, if you don’t own a car you’re nobody; more than this, a big and powerful car. A shiny car which goes with you. The more expensive the car is, the higher your status is. But it’s more or less the same as the tobacco companies have been telling us for decades and now we know that it’s not true, you don’t need to smoke Marlboro to like someone.
Have you ever calculated the cost of your car?
Probably you think you know, more or less, how much money you spend on your car but it’s not the same to guess it than to calculate it. There are many webs, excel pages etc which allows you to calculate the monthly cost, but just add insurance, parking, taxes, maintenance (wheels, oil, etc.), cleaning, … Probably the result will make you scream. It’s very easy to pass 400€ . If you earn 1.000 €, is it worth to you to go to work? Like Marvin Harris say, cars are the sacred cows of our civilization.
Ok but, how will I move through the city?
Well, you have public transport. Metro, buses, and trains are not as they used to be. And if you think taxis are expensive (I do) compare it with the monthly cost of your car.
Well, bikes are the usual answer when you ask about how to move in the city but not many people say it with conviction. Even so, year by year, you can see more and more people riding on the streets. Consider it, it’s cheap, it’s healthy and it’s not as slow as you may think. For example, to go from my home to my work, more than 5 Km, takes me less than 15 minutes and to come back (uphill!!) less than 20. If you’re afraid to go with your bike through the trafic jungle look for help. Web pages like enbicipormadrid.es organize routes on the weekend to show you the best streets to go to your work and, on friday you can join to the biciviernes, to ride with more people that use the same route than you.
Ok, but probably you will need a car sometimes. What you will do on holidays? And if you want to go for a walk through the mountain? It’s easy.
For long trips you can rent a car. Try it, it’s easy and you can choose the model that you need on every occasion: a van, a small car, or a convertible. Why not?. To rent a car for a weekend could cost you less than 50€ plus fuel.
Now car sharing companies are starting to appear. The running is easy. You send them a copy of your driving licence, in some cases you pay a low anual fee and you receive a card. From their website you find the nearest parking to your home and reserve it for the day and the time you need, open the car with your personal card and just drive. You must know when do you want to return it. This system lets you improvise, you don’t need to make a reservation days or weeks before, and the price is amazingly cheap, from 4€ per hour all inclusive (even fuel!) you can have your shared car. I usually use Respiro and my car has always been waiting for me, with baby seats if I ask for it. Only once in almost two years I have had to go to the second parking near my home (10 minutes by feet)
Just give it a chance, it’s easier than you ever may have thought and, last but not least, you will not contribute to broke our planet
